WEEK 5

Synthetic Media
Final Concept: Air Pollution

For the final concept for the synthetic media project, we decided to focus on air pollution that is happening in the world and how we can alert people with using synthetic media.

Here is basic information of air pollution. “Most air pollution is created by people, taking the form of emissions from factories, cars, planes, or aerosol cans. Second-hand cigarette smoke is also considered air pollution. These man-made sources of pollution are called anthropogenic sources Some types of air pollution, such as smoke from wildfires or ash from volcanoes, occur naturally. These are called natural sources.”
-  National Geographic (https://education.nationalgeographic.org/resource/air-pollution)

By reading the articles and watching the video about air pollution got us thinking about why some people don't care and don't respond to threatening messages about climate change, such as air pollution, global warming, etc., that they hear in the media.

“Scientists overwhelmingly agree that our climate is changing, Earth is getting warmer, sea levels are rising, and it's primarily because of humans putting lots of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Yet 4 in 10 Americans aren't convinced.”
- Be Smart (https://weta.org/watch/shows/be-smart/why-people-dont-believe-climate-science)

According to psychologist Daniel Gilbert, people tend to respond most strongly to personal threats, representing abrupt changes in their environment that are immoral or indecent and affecting people now. Moreover, people feel air pollution or climate change is a gradual, impersonal thing that always seems to live in the future.

Throughout the story, the main character is a person who lives in another side of the world where air pollution seems not affact the person’s daily life. The one will encounter the air polluted world through out the VR experience.
